GVEC is committed to enhancing educational opportunities across our region, believing that a brighter and more successful future for everyone begins with quality education. We proudly contribute to local education foundations, which play a vital role in supporting youth education, benefiting both our members and the broader community. By investing in today’s students, we’re helping to build a stronger workforce for tomorrow.
Education foundations are volunteer-led non-profit organizations that generate and distribute funds to school districts to provide financial resources beyond the standard classroom budget. These grants empower educators to bring innovative and creative teaching to life, inspiring lifelong learners and strengthening community engagement.
Jackie Silvius, Lead Librarian and Library Media Specialist at Seguin High School, applied for and received a grant from the Seguin Education Foundation to fund The Seguin StoryWalk® project. Silvius, above, center, cuts the ribbon at the grand reveal of the flagship location.
In total, three Seguin StoryWalks locations will be installed across the city of Seguin. The first was installed in August at Walnut Springs Hike & Bike Trail behind the Seguin Public Library, featuring the book “This is a School” by John Schu. The additional Seguin StoryWalks will be installed along the walking trails at Bauer Park and Park West.
Students in the Career and Technical Education (CTE) program at Seguin High School and CTE teacher Jason Rice also had a hand in the project, building a total of 72 book stands for the first Seguin StoryWalk, while the Seguin Parks and Recreation Department handled the installation.
StoryWalk® is a movement and literacy-boosting project created by Anne Ferguson of Vermont that places an illustrated children’s book, taken apart and displayed in page-by-page order along walking trails in a community. This concept is a fun way for children and adults to enjoy reading and the out- doors at the same time.
