Solar energy is a BIG topic. You’ve heard about it on the radio, read the print ads and seen the TV commercials. Still, although GVEC has made it easier and more affordable than ever to own solar panel systems, we understand some may not be quite ready to make such a large purchase.
That’s Why There’s SunHub!
GVEC offers SunHub Community Solar. It’s a no-strings-attached solution for those interested in renewable solar energy with no upfront investment or fees and no installation or construction required. You simply sign up to purchase a portion of the electricity you use from locally sourced solar energy.
Clean, Local, Renewable
GVEC’s SunHub Generation Station is located on Highway 90A between Seguin and Gonzales. When GVEC brought SunHub online in 2017, it was one of only seven distribution-scale solar projects in Texas. With 6,500 solar panels, the facility has the capacity to deliver more than 4 million kilowatt-hours (kWh) of clean energy each year, all of it produced with South Central Texas sunshine!
Why Would I Want to Participate?
If you want to reduce your carbon footprint but don’t want to install solar panels on or at your home, SunHub offers the best of both worlds. The natural, abundant source of sunshine paired with the solar panels at our two-megawatt facility produces clean energy with no fuel burning and no greenhouse gas emissions.
Aside from purchasing blocks of renewable energy for the same price you already pay for power now, opting to participate will also lock in the current Generation & Transmission (G&T) rate for up to a year. This means if G&T rates go up, the rate you currently pay would remain the same for the portion of energy you’ve opted to purchase from SunHub each month.
How Do I Participate?
Members have the option to purchase from one to five 100kWh-blocks per month. You’ll want to examine how much power your home typically uses each month to help determine how many blocks to subscribe for. For example, if your household consumes at least 500kWh each month, you may want to purchase five blocks. However, if there are months during the year your consumption may drop lower than 500kWh, you’d want to purchase fewer blocks. (Your usage can be found on your monthly statement or on the Usage Overview in MyGVEC.) We can help you decide how many blocks you should purchase.
After determining how many blocks of solar energy you want, fill out the Subscribe to SunHub form on our website. Purchased blocks will begin appearing on your next bill after subscribing.
